GOGOL ACOUSTIC BORDELLO ANNOUNCE EUROPEAN HEADLINE TOUR
On November 18, Gogol Acoustic Bordello will launch a European headlining tour with a show at London’s Electric Ballroom. The month-long outing will take the band to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Ukraine and Italy before wrapping up on December 13 in Paris, France. See below for itinerary.
Gogol Acoustic Bordello features five of the seven members of Gogol Bordello – Eugene Hutz (vocals, guitar), Sergey Ryabtsev (violin), Yury Lemeshev (accordion), Pedro Erazo-Segovia (percussion) and Elizabeth Sun (percussion, backing vocals). Drawing inspiration from gypsy, cabaret and punk traditions, Gogol Bordello’s earliest performances and recordings were largely acoustic affairs before the lineup grew to its current eight- member configuration. Gogol Bordello recently rekindled their acoustic origins while recording their 2010 studio album Trans-Continental Hustle. During the sessions for that album producer Rick Rubin encouraged the band to develop both acoustic and electric arrangements of the songs rekindling the “after party” jam spirit that exists every night in their dressing rooms and tour buses.
Trans-Continental Hustle was crucial because it signified the band’s full circle back to its authentic root – except now it wasn't limited to just native East European folk inspiration. During Gogol Bordello’s first decade, Eugene Hutz and Familia made American, Spanish, Brasilian and Mediterranean music their own as well. "Transcontinental street core, baby!" Or as Rubin says: "Eugene is student of world's folklore, and he creates exiting combinations for new day." Returning the focus to songwriting with Rick Rubin naturally brought the band back to its original form: acoustic, and was reminiscent of their first album, 1999’sVoi la intruder, produced by Jim Sclavunous (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grinderman). It has been sustained through band’s existence that Eugene’s songs evolve on guitar with the gradual addition of the rest. That sound alone stands as a legit enjoyable entity, where new colors come to life, energy is clear, and nothing is lost in translation. It’s the way to get closer to the band’s essence. The way to get closer to characters of Gogol Bordello.
While promoting Trans-Continental Hustle, Gogol Bordello found that some occasions called for a smaller, more intimate musical experience and developed a scaled-down configuration with an emphasis on acoustic instrumentation. One of the first performances of this new dimension of Gogol Bordello took place at NPR headquarters and was described as “the most rollicking and insane Tiny Desk Concert of all time” (http://www.npr.org/2010/12/03/128111544/gogol-bordello-tiny-desk-concert). Since that time, “Gogol Acoustic Bordello” has supplemented their 10 months a year touring schedule with the electric band with a few choice opportunities including a main stage appearance at the legendary Newport Folk Festival, a headlining slot at the Appel Farm Festival, a Bonnaroo performance and, most recently, a surprise opening set for their friend Manu Chao at Terminal 5 in New York City.
Goldminemag.com called Gogol Acoustic Bordello’s “world dance party” one of the 2011 Newport Folk Festival’s “particularly memorable moments” while ConsequenceofSound.net praised their “incredible show” and Glidemagazine.com observed that with such bands as Gogol Acoustic Bordello, “the meaning of ‘folk’ was being redefined right there in Newport Harbor.”
