One of today's most original folk and indie musicians, American composer/singer/harpist Joanna Newsom, will perform at Kulttuuritalo, Helsinki on May 27th.
Inspired by traditional American folk and indie, Newsom grew up in a musical family - both her parents and siblings are all musicians. Key elements in Newsom's music are her individual, at times even child-like voice and harp's simplified, mystical soundscape. Recorded in Newsom's own basement, her debut ep "Walnut Whales" (2002) introduced a completely singular artist to the world. Following releases, debut album "The Milk-Eyed Mender" (2004) and "Ys" (2006) made Newsom the new favourite of both the indie scene and classical music fans.
Newsom's by far most remarkable release, monumental "Have One on Me" was put out this week. Consisting of three discs that add up to over two hours of music, the album became an instant critical success in indie media like Pitchfork as well as in New York Times and Uncut.
Newsom has visited Finland once before in 2007 when she performed solo for almost sold-out Tavastia. At Kulttuuritalo, she will be seen with a band. Tickets cost 42€ +possible handling charge and they will be available at Tiketti and Lippupalvelu on March 2nd.
The concert will be organized in co-operation with Sue Magazine.
